STEM Career Spotlight: User Experience and User Interface
Alisa Bacon, UX Designer, Kforce Consultant
I’ve been working in UX for about three years, and I’ve been a Kforce consultant for just over one year!
Most of my day is spent working with all kinds of people, helping them find ways to improve different software tools and programs. After we talk, I take our ideas all the way from planning to design. For example, if you think about how certain apps work on your phone—all the colors, shapes, buttons and other features you notice when you use them—those are the types of decisions that we make on a daily basis. I work specifically on education projects, so I get to talk to teachers and students and really be creative in brainstorming ideas to enhance the technology they use.
I really love the importance of teamwork in my job. One thing I’ve discovered as a UX designer is that working with other people is the best way to get to the best ideas. I find a lot of excitement in collaborating.
I always knew that I wanted to help people in some way through my career. I was originally planning on becoming a teacher, but during my master’s program I started learning about UX and realized my skillset aligned really well with that field. It worked out in the end, because I still get to be involved in the education world through my current role!
My number one recommendation is to use your free time to tinker around with everything that interests you. There are a lot of free tools out there that are just a click away. Also, reach out to people who work in areas you find interesting. They are always willing to help and share what they know!
